Bow shirt sewing pattern

Skill level: Intermediate

Bow is a good project for makers who want to practise fitted shirt construction with a more delicate finish. The shape is not overly complex, but the bow, collar, yoke, darts and French seams all need clean handling.

For an easier sew, use cotton poplin, linen or another stable shirting fabric. If you want the full effect, use organza or chiffon and take your time with cutting, pressing and seam finishing.

Fabric requirements

• Fabric: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 140 cm / 56 in
• Fusible interfacing: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 67 cm / 27 in

The sample is made in transparent silk organza. Organza gives the shirt depth, lightness and a more delicate layered finish. Chiffon can also work, but it will be harder to control.

For a more straightforward version, choose cotton poplin, linen or a stable shirting fabric. You will lose some transparency, but the bow and shirt shape will be easier to sew cleanly.

Bow is available in UK 4–16 / EUR 32–44 / US 0–12.

Choose your size by comparing your bust, waist and hip measurements to the size chart. Because Bow is fitted through the body with front and back darts, check the bust and waist before cutting your final fabric.

All sewing patterns are drafted for a dressmaker’s B cup, so fuller cup sizes may need a full bust adjustment.

The bow brings the drama. The collar and button stand keep it in shirt territory. The front and back darts shape the body, while the cap sleeves and double-layer yoke give the upper section a neat, controlled finish.

Make it in organza if you want transparency and depth. Use chiffon if you want something lighter and more delicate. Choose cotton poplin or linen if you want the same shape with a cleaner, easier construction.

This is a good project for makers who want a shirt that feels dressed-up without becoming stiff.
