Carmen corset sewing pattern

Carmen is made for aspiring corset makers who want to learn the basics without making something forgettable. The construction focuses on the standard modern method: a firm structural coutil layer, a decorative outer layer, boning between the layers, internal boning channels and clean bias-bound edges.

You will build the same core skills used across the modern corset range — structure, shaping, boning placement, edge finishing and decorative fabric handling — but with a bolder silhouette from the start. Carmen is beginner-level, yes. But it has absolutely no interest in looking timid.

Fabric usage:

• Decorative fabric: 140 cm wide × 44 cm
• Structural coutil: 140 cm wide × 83 cm

Fabric suggestions:
Use structural coutil for the strength layer. That is what gives Carmen the support, stability and shape it needs.

For the outer layer, choose a lightweight fabric that suits the mood you want: satin, cotton, chiffon or lace all work well when paired with a stable corset base. Carmen is especially good for burlesque styling, so this is the place to bring in lace, Devoré polka-dot net, fringing, contrast panels, beading or a fabric with real attitude.

Lace appliqué and placement instructions are not included in the pattern.

Carmen is available in UK 4–20 / EUR 32–48 / US 0–16. Use your bust, waist and hip measurements to choose the closest base size. If you fall between sizes, make a toile first and adjust for your shape before sewing your final corset.

Carmen is what happens when a beginner corset decides to lean into the drama. It has the clean, teachable construction of the modern range, but the styling is pure burlesque: lower through the bust, sharper through the front hem, and ready for decoration that refuses to whisper.

The front shape is where Carmen earns its attitude. The plunging hemline gives the corset a more daring line, while the surface gives you space to play with lace, Devoré net, fringing, appliqué, contrast fabric or beading. It is a pattern made for makers who want their first corset to feel expressive, not cautious.
