Fari coat sewing pattern

Skill level: Intermediate

Fari is best suited to intermediate makers, or ambitious beginners ready to take on a bigger outerwear project. The construction is not overloaded with tiny details, but the scale of the coat means accuracy still matters.

Take your time with the trim, collar, lining and sleeve straps. These are the details that make Fari look deliberate rather than oversized for the sake of it.

If you are new to coats, use a stable fabric and make a toile first to check the shoulder line, sleeve volume and overall length.

Fabric requirements

• Main fabric: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 260 cm / 103 in
• Fusible interfacing: 120 cm / 48 in wide × 150 cm / 59 in
• Lining: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 180 cm / 71 in

For a strong cocoon shape, use a heavier wool or thick coating fabric. This gives Fari the weight and structure it needs to hold the silhouette.

For a lighter version, use a mid-weight or lightweight outerwear fabric. The shape becomes softer, easier to wear in transitional weather, and better suited to evening layering.

The original sample uses mid-weight wool with a silk habotai lining.

Fari is available in UK 4–16 / EUR 32–44 / US 0–12.

Choose your size by comparing your bust, waist and hip measurements to the size chart. Because this is a roomy, longline coat, also think about how you want to layer it. If you plan to wear thicker garments underneath, check the fit through the shoulders, sleeves and body before cutting your final fabric.

All sewing patterns are drafted for a dressmaker’s B cup, so fuller cup sizes may need a full bust adjustment.

Fari is a coat pattern with volume, structure and attitude.

The shape is long and enveloping, with an off-the-shoulder line that gives the coat its relaxed, oversized feel. The collar sits high at the chin. The sleeves are chunky. The pockets are deep. The trim gives the whole piece a cleaner edge.

Make it in a heavy wool and Fari becomes bold, warm and sculptural. Use something lighter and it turns into a dramatic layer for evenings, events or transitional weather.

This is a good project for makers who want outerwear that does more than keep warm. Fari has shape. It has weight. It has somewhere to go.
