Florence playsuit sewing pattern
Dropped waist. Asymmetric bib. 1920s bite.
The Florence playsuit sewing pattern brings a sharper 1920s mood to a summer one-piece.
It has a dropped waist, boyish proportions and an asymmetrical bib-style top that gives the silhouette its Art Deco edge. Circular pockets with pin-tuck detail add shape to the shorts, while the ruched waistband and side zip keep the fit clean.
Easy to wear. More interesting than easy.

At a glance
Florence is a playsuit pattern with vintage energy and modern construction. The shape is relaxed through the body, but the details make it feel deliberate: tabard-style upper section, double-layer yoke, slash neckline, chevron shaping and asymmetric straps.

Skill level & tips
Skill level: Intermediate
Florence is best for intermediate makers, or advanced sewists who want a polished one-piece with strong design lines. The overall silhouette is not fussy, but the bib, yoke, straps, pockets and side zip need careful handling.
For an easier sew, choose a soft cotton or another stable, non-shifting woven fabric. Once you are more confident, sand-washed crepe, satin or silk will give the playsuit a softer, more fluid finish.
If you want to push the 1920s feel further, add beading to the bib or yoke area.
Fabric usage & suggestions
Fabric requirements
- Main fabric: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 150 cm / 59 in
- Fusible interfacing: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 15 cm / 6 in
Use a stable woven fabric if you want the cleanest construction. Cotton is the easiest option and helps the bib, straps and pocket details stay controlled.
For a more luxurious version, choose sand-washed crepe, satin or silk. These fabrics will soften the drape and make the playsuit feel more evening-led, but they need more careful cutting and sewing.

Size charts
Florence is available in UK 4–16 / EUR 32–44 / US 0–12.
Choose your size by comparing your bust, waist and hip measurements to the size chart. Because Florence is a one-piece garment with a dropped waist, check the body length and crotch depth before cutting your final fabric.
All sewing patterns are drafted for a dressmaker’s B cup, so fuller cup sizes may need a full bust adjustment.

Long description
Florence is a playsuit pattern with a vintage mood and a sharper line.
The dropped waist gives the silhouette its 1920s pull. The asymmetrical bib top adds the drama. The circular pockets, pin-tucks, ruched waistband and chevron yoke stop the piece from feeling like a simple summer romper.
Make it in cotton for a cleaner, easier sew. Use sand-washed crepe or satin if you want something softer and more glamorous. Add beading if you want to lean into the Art Deco reference.
This is a good project for makers who like detail, but do not want a heavy garment. Light shape. Strong design. Enough construction to make it satisfying.
