Madeline trouser sewing pattern

Skill level: Intermediate / Advanced

Madeline is for makers with some trouser experience, or for confident intermediate sewists ready to take on sharper details. The front pockets, waistband, zip and central crease all need accuracy, but the back jetted pockets are the most technical part.

Want to simplify the project? Leave off the back jetted pockets for your first pair. You will still get the cigarette-pant shape, but with a cleaner construction path.

Fabric requirements

• Main fabric: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 125 cm / 50 in
• Fusible interfacing: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 32 cm / 13 in
• Pocket lining: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 25 cm / 10 in

For comfort, use cotton with a very slight stretch. For a more traditional finish, choose medium suiting wool, cotton twill or lightweight denim.

Choose a fabric that presses well. The crease, pockets and waistband need a clean finish, so avoid anything too soft, spongy or slippery for your first pair.

Choose your size by comparing your waist and hip measurements to the size chart. Because Madeline has slim legs and a tailored waist, check the fit through the waist, hip, thigh and calf before cutting your final fabric.

If you are between sizes, make a toile first. Small trouser adjustments are much easier before the pockets, waistband and zip are sewn.

Madeline is a cropped trouser pattern with a proper tailored attitude.

The shape is inspired by the cigarette pant: slim through the leg, cropped at ¾ length and sharpened with a central crease. Slash pockets keep the front clean. Jetted back pockets add the detail. The optional turn-up cuff gives the hem a more vintage finish.

Make it in cotton twill for a crisp everyday pair. Use suiting wool for something more classic. Try lightweight denim if you want the shape to feel more casual but still structured.

This is a good project for makers who want to sharpen their trouser skills without cutting a full-length tailored pant.
