Moda dress sewing pattern

Skill level: Beginner / Intermediate

Moda is a strong next step if you want to improve your dressmaking without taking on anything too heavy. The construction is streamlined: panel seams replace waist darts, the invisible zip sits in the side seam, and the facings keep the finish clean without adding a full lining.

If you are newer to sewing, skip the piping for your first version. If you want the panel lines to stand out, add contrast piping and take your time around the curves.

Fabric requirements

• Main fabric: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 130 cm / 52 in
• Fusible interfacing: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 45 cm / 18 in

Use a stable woven fabric that presses well and holds the panel lines cleanly. Cotton, linen, raw silk, fine suiting wool or a structured dress-weight woven will all work.

The original sample uses waxed cotton for a subtle sheen. For a bolder version, colour-block the dress panels or use contrast piping to make the shaping more visible.

Choose your size by comparing your bust, waist and hip measurements to the size chart. The panel seams help shape the body, so fit through the bust, waist and hip before cutting your final fabric.

All sewing patterns are drafted for a dressmaker’s B cup, so fuller cup sizes may need a full bust adjustment.

Moda is a minimal dress pattern with a sharper edge.

The neckline is clean. The cap sleeves are soft. The panel seams pull the shape in without relying on darts, while the piping traces the body and gives the dress its structure.

Make it in waxed cotton for a subtle sheen. Use linen for something quieter. Try raw silk or fine suiting wool if you want the dress to feel more polished. Keep the piping tonal for restraint, or use contrast piping when you want the seam lines to do more.

This is a good project for makers who want a clean dress with proper detail. Simple silhouette. Considered construction. A finish that earns the effort.
