Panthea shorts sewing pattern

Skill level: Beginner / Intermediate

Panthea is approachable, but not plain. The shorts are a good challenge if you are ready to work through proper construction details: pleats, pocket openings, fly front, waistband and back darts.

For the easiest sew, choose a stable woven fabric such as cotton, linen or suiting wool. Denim can also work, but keep bulk in mind around the fly, waistband and pocket trim.

Fabric requirements

• Fabric: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 95 cm / 38 in
• Interfacing: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 60 cm / 24 in

Use a stable woven fabric that presses well and holds shape. Cotton will keep the shorts crisp. Linen gives them a more relaxed summer feel. Suiting wool makes them sharper. Denim gives the pattern more weight and attitude.

Avoid anything too soft or slippery if this is your first fly-front project. The pleats and waistband will be easier to control in fabric that behaves.

Choose your size by comparing your waist and hip measurements to the size chart. Because the shorts are high-waisted with pleats and back darts, check both waist fit and hip ease before cutting your final fabric.

If you fall between sizes, make a toile first and adjust the waist, darts or side seams before sewing the final pair.

Panthea is a shorts pattern with a little discipline.

The shape is playful, but the construction is grown-up: double front pleats, slash pockets with trim, back darts, a concealed waistband and a proper button-and-zip fly. Those details make the finished shorts feel sharper than a quick summer make.

Use cotton for a clean everyday pair. Use linen for relaxed heat. Use suiting wool if you want something neater, or denim if you want a stronger edge.

This is a good pattern for makers who want to practise useful trouser-style construction on a smaller project. Less fabric than full trousers. Enough detail to make the work count.
