Saira dress sewing pattern

Skill level: Intermediate / Advanced

Saira is best for makers who are confident with fitted dress construction and ready to handle sheer or delicate fabrics. The transparent upper section, French seams and close body fit need care.

For an easier version, use a stable body fabric and organza for the yoke. For a more delicate version, use chiffon for the upper section and take your time cutting, pinning and finishing the seams. An overlocker can simplify some of the construction, but the sheer section still needs clean handling.

Fabric requirements

• Fabric A, dress body: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 100 cm / 40 in
• Fabric B, upper dress: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 64 cm / 25 in
• Fusible interfacing: 120 cm / 48 in wide × 25 cm / 10 in
• Lining: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 75 cm / 30 in

Use cotton linen, raw silk, satin or another stable woven for the dress body. For the upper yoke, use organza if you want more control, or chiffon if you want a softer, lighter finish.

Stable fabrics make the fit easier to manage. Sheer fabrics make the neckline more striking, but they ask more of you.

Choose your size by comparing your bust, waist and hip measurements to the size chart. Because Saira is close-fitting with full-length body seams, make a toile first if you are between sizes or adjusting the bust, waist or hip.

All sewing patterns are drafted for a dressmaker’s B cup, so fuller cup sizes may need a full bust adjustment.

Saira is a fitted dress pattern with vintage shape and a sharper sheer detail.

The body is close and clean, shaped through full-length seams rather than left plain. The transparent upper yoke opens the neckline visually, while the heart-shaped bust line and crew neck collar give the dress its character.

Make the body in cotton linen for a more controlled sew. Use raw silk or satin when you want the dress to feel more polished. Choose organza for an easier transparent yoke, or chiffon if you want something softer and more delicate.

This is a good project for makers who want a dress that looks refined, but not safe.
