Skater dress sewing pattern

Skill level: Beginner

Skater is one of the quickest dress projects in the range. The construction is simple, but the fabric still matters. Use a fine stretch jersey with good recovery so the bodice holds shape and the skirt keeps its bounce.

An overlocker / serger will give the cleanest stretch finish and help preserve the movement of the fabric. If this is your first stretch project, make a test version first to check fit, stretch and skirt length.

Fabric requirement

• Stretch jersey: 140 cm / 55 in wide × 210 cm / 83 in

Use a fine stretch knit jersey with good recovery. Four-way stretch jersey is a strong option if you want comfort and movement. Lycra-based stretch fabrics, including swimwear-style fabrics, can also work if they recover well after stretching.

Avoid fabric that grows too much while sewing. The dress is simple, so the fabric needs to do its job properly.

Skater is available in UK 4–22 / EUR 32–50 / US 0–18.

Choose your size by comparing your bust, waist and hip measurements to the size chart. Because this is a stretch dress, fabric recovery will affect the final fit. A firmer jersey will hold the bodice more securely; a softer jersey will feel looser and more relaxed.

Skater is the fast stretch dress with a little attitude.

The high neckline frames the top. The thick straps keep the bodice clean. The full-circle mini skirt kicks out from the waist and gives the dress its movement.

Make it in a plain jersey for something simple and sharp. Use a print if you want the skirt to do more when it moves. Choose a stretch fabric with good recovery and the dress stays neat through the bodice while still feeling easy to wear.

This is a good project for beginners who want a quick win without ending up with something forgettable.
